Oh barefoot man with coffee cup,
Canst thou give us a little rest?
"Indeed not." the Hawk cries with a loud voice
"My tigers must be the best!"
"With kicks and pulls and plenty of sprints
You'll be ready and willing to win."
But, oh barefoot coach with whip in hand
Don't you know that murder's a sin?
We're gasping for breath and ready to die
Don't work us so hard--oh, don't be so cruel.
"Keep quiet!" Hauck roars in threatening voice,
And makes us swim a mile more in the pool!
I come every day for torture and pain,
I say "I must stop this fool thing."
I vow I won't go on with this any more,
But the next day I'm there once again.
I don't know why I'm such a great fool
To come with my friends to this place.
And I know that some day we'll all perish there
In that graveyard they call Patton Pool.
The Bridge: Hauck's Corner.
It is that time of year when benevolence prevails amongst men and so it
is with the Hawk. I would like to take this time to thank all the Patton
parents who have given so graciously of themselves to promote our program
here at the pool. My special gratitude to those men and women who have
hustled up advertisements for our X-Mas meet. With this revenue I can carry
out the extensive plans that I have for the furtherment of swimming in
Michigan. Also a well deserved thanks to the loyal parents that constantly
frequent the pool balcony and swim office. These people, who daily suffer
my idiosyncrasies and still manage to believe in my work, are definitely
deserving of a pat on the back. So to all disciples of the Hawk, I send
my fondest seasons greetings and may 1964 bring us to better understanding
of one another.
