Rick Skarbo, Ron Boyd, Pete Adams and Jim Hoyer came within a tenth
of a second of a national age-group medley relay record yesterday as high
school swimmers moved from Saturday's state meet at East Lansing into the
Michigan AAU age-group championships at Garden City High.
The Patton Pool youngsters swam the 200-yard medley relay in 1:45.3,
a tenth of a second slower than the 15-17 mark. Skarbo, of Western High,
and Adams, of Pershing, each won two prep titles Saturday.
The Turner Swim Club team of Charles Russell, John Skantze, Leon Trumbauer
and Mark Tucker was clocked in state record 1:58 for the 13-14 200-yard
medley relay.
Ken Wiebeck, who set a mark of 49.3 seconds in winning the 100-yard
freestyle for Thurston in the high school meet made the distance in :50.5
seconds yesterday for a 15-17 record. Patton led the team standing with
157 points. Northwest Aquatic Club had 102 points, Turners 69 and Maple
Swim Club 39.
