The preliminaries to the Catholic League swimming finals were held on Monday, March 4, and Wednesday, Marcdh 6, at Patton Pool. The Cubs qualified second to Austin with eight men and two relay units earning the right to compete in the championships.
In the championship meet on March 8, the tankers were led by Tim Sullivan (2G), who finished third in the 50 yard freestyle and fourth in the 100 yard freestyle, and Dick Duffield (1H), who finished fourth in the 100 yard backstroke and fifth in the 200 yard freestyle. Other qualifiers were Denny Derda (3E), who finished third in the 100 yard breastroke; Tom Duffield (3G), fourth in the 400 yard freestyle; Bill Cleary (4E), fifth in the 50 yard freestyle; and Frank Brady (2G), sixth in the 100 yard breastroke. The 200 yard freestyle relay, composed of Bob Bauser (3A), rick Schroeter (3E), Glen Konkle (3A), and Cleary finished in third place.
The Cub hopes for a second place finish were washed away when the 200 yard medley relay consisting of Konkle, Derda, Tom Shumaker (3E), and Bauser was disqualified after having qualified with a third place finish in the finals.
The final standings placed U of D High in fourth place behind Austin, De La Salle, and Visitation.
