Star in Meet

Three Detroit-area youngsters Gary Gottschling and Laura Novac, of Patton Pool, and Richard Phillips, of the Maple Swim Club, of Birmingham, brought home 12 first places in the age-group swimming meet held over the weekend in Fort Wayne. Gary, 12, won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:21.1, 100 freestyle in 58.8, 50 backstroke in 30.1 and 50 butterfly in 29.2. Laura, 10, led in the 200 individual medley in 2:30.2, 50 breastroke in 38.1 and 50 butterfly in 33. Richard 10, took five firsts, the 50 freestyle in 29.2, 50 backstroke in 34, 100 individual medley in 2:43.9, 100 freestyle in 1:02.7 and 50 butterfly in 32. Gary and Richard also were the high point winners in their divisions while Laura was second to Vicki Riebling, of Kokomo, Ind. Johanna Cooke, 15, of the Golden Lions Swim Club, won the 100 breastroke in 1:14. Tom Sullivan, in charge of Patton Pool's Holiday Swim Meet next Sunday and Monday, said approximately 1500 entries have been received. The meet will start at 9 a.m. both days.
