Tom Szuba just couldn't wait. The super senior from Dearborn Hihg started breaking records in the State Class A High School Championships in the preliminaries here yesterday afternoon at Matt Mann Pool.
Bucked up by Szuba's fine efforts, Dearborn virtually wrapped up the team championship by qualifying an army of competitors for this afternoon's finals.
The first record to get the Szuba touch was the one that he set in last year's state meet at East Lansing, the 200-yard individual medley.
Szuba cut through the Michigan water in the prelims for a 1:58.11, five-tenths better than his old mark.
In possibly one of the most demanding events at the high school level, Szuba annexed another record. He won the 400-yard freestyle heat in 3:44.65 which lopped plenty time off Doug Webster's 3:49.77 set in 1966.
In addition Szuba being the fastest qualifier in the finals in two events, Dearborn has the capability of scoring in 10 other championship events.
Dearborn even broke Pioneer High's 400-yard freestyle relay state record performance of last year. In 1971, the Pioneers were clocked in 3:21.69 while Dearborn splashed to a 3:21.0 time in the prelims.
Following suit, Dearborn swimmer Paul Foster lowered his own record even further in the 100-yard backstroke. Last year he had a state record time of :54.41 and yesterday he was even faster at :53.97.
Bringing the total of records broken in the preliminaries to six was Bruce Wright of Birmingham Seaholm. Wright was the fastest qualifier in the 200-yard freestyle at 1:46.55. This was just a trifle faster than Peter Daly's old record as the Huron High swimmer was timed in 1:46.86 last year.
Wright eclipsed another state mark in the 100-yard freestyle with a :47.50 clocking. The former mark was held by Bill Hall of Grand Blanc at 48.90 and it was set last year.
