Swim Mark
Pete Adams retained the State AAU one-mile swimming
championship yesterday
at Patton Pool by shattering his own record with a clocking of 19
minutes
41 seconds.
The Pershing High junior, who won two state high school
freestyle titles,
eclipsed his old mark by 51.3 seconds.
Adams was trailed by Patton teammate John Powser, and Allen
McDaid,
of the Northwest Aquatic Club. Both of their times also bettered the
former
mark of 20:32.3. Powser was timed in 19:58.9 and McDaid in
20:15.5.
Records also were set in each of the other three age bracket
events.
Doug Webster repeated in the 13-14-year-old class as an entry of Coach
Harry Hauck's host pool delegation. His clocking of 20:24.3
erased
his former mark of 21:53 flat. Webster was trailed by Lester McCormick
(22:14.1) and Rich Szuba (22:27.7.
Greg Golin, of Northwest AC, upset defending champion Mike
Vizena, of
Fitzgerald Swim Club, in the 11-12-year-old event with a clocking of
21:48.2.
Bob Foley, a teammate of Golin, was runner-up in 22:56.5 and Vizena,
who
set the old mark of 23:49.8 last year, placed third in 23:09.
John Szuba, of Patton, took the 10-and-under honors in
25:28, trailed
by Steve Roxborough, of Kalamazoo, with 25:44.2 and Tom Koch of Patton,
27:05.5. Last year John Allred set the previous mark of 25:54.9
