DETROIT SWIMMERS
WIN IN LONG HAUL

AKRON, O. -- Detroit swimmers swept major honors here Friday in record-smashing
style to dominate the National AAU long-distance swimming championships.
The Patton Pool team won the team title while the Northwest Aquatic
Club of Detroit was second.
Joanne Scarborough, 15, of the Patton Pool team, splashed to a new junior
national record in the three mile event by knocking four minutes off the
old mark. She was timed in one hour, 10 minutes, 36.8 seconds.
She was trailed by Tina Solis, Joan Makkonen and Mary Beth Ceresko (all
of Patton) while Sue Smith of NW Aquatic was fifth and Patton's Sharon
Hancock sixth.
Gary Gottschling of Patton set a meet record in the boy's 11-12 one-mile
swim while Greg Golin of NW Aquatic won the mile in the 13-14 class.
