Skarbo Sets Mark;
Team Wins Relays

MIDDLEBURG HEIGHTS, O., May 13 - Rick Skarbo, 16, of Detroit, broke
the National Junior 100-yard backstroke record yesterday as his Patton
Swim Club won most of the honors in the annual Berea Relays.
Skarbo, 16, was timed in 56.9 seconds.
Bill Denny, of Southern Methodist, held the old mark of 57.1, made a year
ago. Mark Mathis, Ohio State freshman, was second in 58.8; Eddie
Bettendorft, of Lakewood, O., third in 59.0; and Mike Lackowicz, of Toronto,
fourth in 59.3.
Patton Swim Club also won four of the relays.
Skarbo, Jim Hoyer, Ron Boyd and Pete Adams took the 200-yard medley with
a meet record of 1:46.8. Tom Sullivan and Dennis Manrique joined Hoyer
and Skarbo to win the 200- yard breaststroke relay in 2:06.
John Powser and Jay Osrowske teamed with Boyd
and Adams to take the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:32. John Szuba, Greg
Penn, Doug Webster and Adams took the mixed age group relay, for 10, 12,
14, and 16-year-olds, in 1:47.1. |
