Prep Sets Age Group Swim Mark
LAKEWOOD. O., April 22 -
Rick Skarbo, who set records in the 100-yard backstroke and 200-yard individual
medley for Detroit Western High last winter, established a national age
group mark in the Lake Erie AAU championships yesterday at Lakewood, O.
Skarbo, 17, swam the 200-yard backstroke in 2:05.4 in the preliminaries,
coming back with 2:04.7 clocking in the finals. The former record
was 2:09.3.
The former Western swimmer represented Patton Pool which had a quadruple
winner in the two-day meet in Doug Webster as well as a triple winner in
Pete Adams.
Webster set a district record of 2:15.6 for the 200-yard butterfly in
the 13-14 age group in addition to placing first in the 200-yard backstroke,
400-yard freestyle and 200-yard individual medley.
Adams led in the 15-17 age class 200 and 400-yard freestyle and the
men's 100-yard freestyle. Skarbo also won the men's 100-yard backstroke.
Other Patton winners were Johanna Cooke, 13-14 girls' 100-yard breaststroke;
Peggy Sherk, 10-year and under girls' 100-yard individual medley; Ron Boyd,
15-17 boys' 200-yard butterfly; and Mary Lou Shefsky, 11-12 girls' 100-yard
butterfly.
