CHAUTAQUA, Ohio., June 19. Doug Webster, 16, of the Patton Swim Club, of Detroit, broke the Midwest men's open 1,650-yard freestyle record when he covered the distance in 19 minutes 26 seconds. yesterday. Ed Beck, of Cincinnati, held the old record of 19:30.
Joan Makkonen, another 16-year-old Patton star, set a women's record of 21:10, breaking the 23:13 record held by Caroline Booth, of Dayton.  Laura Novak, won two events in the girls' 10-and-under division, the 100 yard backstroke in 1:21.4 and the 200-yard individual medley in 2:52.
