Records Fall as 1,500 Compete in Swim Meet
By GEORGE E. VAN
Just to give an idea of how swimming interest has boomed, it required nearly eight hours to run off the 35 events, involving more than 1,500 entries, in the Women's City Club age-group meet at Warren Fitzgerald High yester- day.
This was no dragged out affair. The events were run off with clock-like efficiency by the Michigan Aquatic Association officials.
These age-group meets are a production line displaying physi- cal fitness in operation. This was part of the nationwide program sponsored by President Kennedy.
Competing in the girls 10 years and under classification, Lisa Beckenhauer set a state mark of 30.4 in the 50-yard free. Her time of 39.1 for the 50-yard breaststroke also was a record. And a mark fell when she finished second to Laura Novak of Garden City, in the 50 backstroke which was won by Laura Novak in 37 seconds
At the top of the age groups, 17 years is the limit, Rick Skarbo, of Western High, who swims for Patton Pool, won the 200-yard medley, the 100yard butterfly and the 100-yard back in 2:11.4, 57.2 and 57.4 respectively. . . all fast times.
