Beats Chadsey Explorers
Meeting Chadsey in the second meet of the season here January 11, the Tankers defeated the Explorers 65-38. Leading the Cowboys to victory were George Saldana, taking first in the 400-yard freestyle and 200-yard freestyle, Ed Picard, who triumphed in the 100-yard butterfly, Ricky Skarbo, winning the 100-yard backstroke and 200-yard individual medley, Dennis Manrique taking the 100-yard breaststroke and Tom Marudas, Craig Dwyer, Ed Picard and Jerry Bean the medley relay.
Although losing to Cooley 59-46 on January 4, here, the Tankers managed to crack five pool records in the attempt by winning six of the eleven events. Honors go to returning all-city diver Sal Prado, who took the event, George Saldana who broke records in the 400-yard and 200-yard freestyle, all-city backstroker Ricky Skarbo with records in the 100-yard backstroke and the 200-yard individual medley. Dennis Manrique also set a record in the 100-yard breaststroke.
Western also had two practice meets with Cass Tech and Pershing High Schools. Although meeting defeat in both, they showed possibilities of a prosperous season ahead.
