- "Doc Szuba . . ." Those two words still conjure up confidence,
respect, a feeling of security. You didn't think of him as a dentist -
which he was - but as a kind of generalized doctor, standing in the
background, making sure all was well. Sort of like the omnipotent doctor
of America's small-town West who seemed to be there with the ultimate
solutions when small problems got big. Doc Szuba was a resource, a
pillar, a patron of Patton Pool and all that went with it. Probably many
people never realized how central a support he was. But that's how he
wanted it. A quiet man with no loud statement to make about himself,
able and willing to work behind the scenes, rewarded by positive results and
nothing more. I doubt that he knew how far those positive results went,
because there were others who certainly did see what he did and who benefited
from the role model he set as much as from his tangible giving. The
modesty and the good works speak very loudly at this distant date. When
all the hootin' and hollerin' are done, the things that have the most enduring
value are those selfless acts that define us all. We've lost "Doc Szuba"
now, but the acts are his legacy and we are the heirs. Thanks, Doc, for
the kindnesses and the memories… -- Sully
