My Life After Patton:
I was a member of the club from June 1965 until Labor
Day 1967. My first day with the club was spent at Belle Isle canoeing the
canals with Ed Picard as my boat mate, and we have been friends this 35
years hence. At Cathedral High School, I swam against Steve Waszak. After
graduation, I lifeguarded at Brennan Pools for seven years during the summers.
At Wayne State University I swam the 200 butterfly, and acted as
interim coach when Coach John Hussey died. During that time I bumped
into a few Patton swimmers: the Reeder sisters at Central Michigan
and Doug Messer
at Wayne State's championship meet my senior year. In 1972 I married
Pamela Starr, a Wayne State classmate and alumni of Cody High School, class
of 68. We managed a 15 unit student apartment, while completing our
junior and senior years, and I held a part time job with Detroit Parks
and Recreation, guarding at both Brennan and Patton pools. After
graduating, we moved to San Francisco where we both took jobs with Bechtel
engineering corporation. After a three month tour of Europe in 1978,
we worked at the Presidio Army Base, located at the base of the Golden
Gate Bridge, just a short walk from our apartment. In 1981 we
moved to Concord, California a suburb fifty miles northwest of San Francisco
where I started a job as a cardiology technician at John Muir Hospital.
In 1982 our son Heinz Christian was born, followed by his sister, Elisa
Marie, in 1986. In 1996 we bought our first home after almost
20 years of renting! It is a continual work in progress (just ask
Ed Picard!). I am now a cardiac ultrasound technician and Pamela
is self employed. Christian starts his first year at college this
fall, majoring in computers, and Elisa will start high school this month.
