My Life After Patton:
I haven't done any competitive swimming since Patton although I do
enjoy scuba diving. My wife Carol and I have two daughters (both married),
one here in Yuma and the other in Temecula, California, about 3 hours away.
I'm self-employed and do air conditioning here in Yuma and have had the
privilege of doing the air conditioning on 5 of the Kingdom Halls around
Arizona and California. (11/97)
Some Things I Remember:
Most of my memories have to do with being COLD. I guess that's why
I'm here in Yuma. When it gets below 75, I'm ready for long-johns and mittens.
The coldest I remember was getting ready for the 4-mile Invitational, doing
laps between the docks at Belle Isle, and Hauck with a steaming cup of
coffee, sweatsuit and hood on, screaming encouragement at us as we turned
blue. And at the same time seeing Vivian Carrozo doing laps in that cold
water, oblivious to it. (11/97)
Reflections:
I think it has to do with tolerance to pain. After surviving all the
rat races, 4 mile IMs backwards, and everything else, there just aren't
a lot of things in this world that can break one's spirit. A survivor survives.
