Joan and her husband Ed have been married for 27 years. Ed is a retired Navy Lt. Commander. They have 2 sons: Jeff 25 and Jon 24. Both boys have been active in club, high school and college swimming and water polo. Joan is the first Makkonen to get a masters degree. She has worked in a number of positions for the Navy and San Diego County, just to mention a few. Presently she is working for the State of Arizona. in the Child Protective Services. Her resume is outstanding. I can say that because she's my sister and it's true.

As her older sister, I can tell you these things. Joan is a very bright, talented, and caring person. She still has that zest for life. She is fun to be with especially if you go play Bingo with her. (9/98)
