My Life After Patton:
Some things I remember:
-
"Abdul" Sahagian - Towel wrapped on his head and stripes on his butt from
the sun burning through his tank suit singing Ahab the A-rab
-
Looking across the equipment room at Powser with blue lips and grease all
over his body while we waited the next set at Brennen. Water temp - 64
degrees
-
Hurling contests behind the Brennen bleachers while on weed patrol
-
Fishing the guard tower out of the pool on Labor Day while Mike R. is mooning
us (I think I still have that picture somewhere)
-
Bets on pulling victims from the water
-
Ron Boyd doing curls with a park bench
-
Load Limit 500 lb sign over stall in guard room
-
Ed, Fergy and me canoeing down the Au Sable (I believe you actually caught
a trout will trolling) and sleeping on the beach of Lake Huron. Some kids
woke us up and Fergy told them to leave us alone because we were escaped
convicts.
-
Camping with the team on Lake Huron and playing Capture the Flag with Hawk,
Sully, and Ed on my team.
-
The time we were working out at Belle Isle and the police were trolling
for a body. We had just finished a set between the docks and I went to
stand up only to place my feet on the back of a scuba diver. Of course
I thought it was the body until he started moving. Talk about almost having
a heart attack!
-
Fergy eating peanut butter and relish sandwiches so that no one would steal
his lunch and we didn't!
-
In May of 1962 while we were at West Point for the Jr. National AAU Indoor
Water Polo Championships and having some spare time, "Hawk" gave us a choice
of going into New York City for the afternoon or climbing the side of this
cliff. Thinking we were going to be in the car again on another infamous
Hawkmobile ride--bodies packed three high and visibility zero through cigar
smoke (it was 50 miles away)-- we opted for the cliff. Who actually went
with us has kind of blanked out of my mind either because of trauma or
old age-- maybe both. At first the rocks were big and easy to climb but
as we got higher it began to get tricky and then downright terrifying!
Nudging up inch by inch in tennies and shorts and searching for anything
to put your feet on and crevices to put your fingers in was reeee-ally
interesting. Up to this point I had been arachnophobic but as I clung to
any crack in the rocks that I could and spiders crawled over my hands there
was no way I was going to let go or brush them away. How high was this
cliff? Well at one point we were watching a plane go by at eye level, that's
when we knew there was no turning back. It was a long way down and looking
for those foot and hand places, going down feet first did not appeal to
any of us at that time. At one point I remember thinking of how I would
have to tell my mom that instead of the three sons she had when we left
she now had two. Later when I told my brother Mark what I was thinking
he indicated that he was preparing his own explanation of my demise for
when he got home. When we finally reached the top we found that it was an
easier yet tough walk through trees and large boulders down the other side.
We laid there on our backs thanking any and all of the dieties we could
think of and wondering why and what possessed us to do something that insane.
It was at that time that the Hawk shouted out "Well who's ready to head
back down?" With sideways glances at each other while we were still on
our backs I believe I heard Savinsky mumble an obscenity in the direction
of the voice and all was silent. It was the only time I believe there was
almost a full mutiny on the team. That is, everyone except McNairy. As
we all started the scenic route down, Harry and Jim headed back the way
we came. We reached the bottom and came around to the cliff side in time
to see them slowly moving towards a dead-end that they couldn't see. We
yelled to them but they were too high up to hear us. We sat about an hour
waiting for them to reach the bottom. I give Jim a lot of credit for that,
but then again I don't know how long he'd been in therapy before that or
for that matter since. I talked to Harry the other day and in remembering
the Patton days and swimming for him I said, "You know Harry we would have
climbed the side of a mountain for you." Then I thought about it and said
, "Hey wait a minute-- we did!."
