My Life After Patton?
I'm living in the remote yet very stunning Tasmania, Australia. My
capital assests are small: a bus that I live in, a covered deck for outdoor
meals, a tiny office, sauna, open-air studio and worm driven composting
toilet. There is no electricity here, so I power a few things (like my
lap top) off four solar panels. Roaring Beach is my back yard, forested
hill my front yard. I can't say I swim all that much anymore, but I do
enjoy riding the waves with my boogie board. My major passion is to sculpt
benches using solid timber and beach stones. In a week or so, I should
have my web site up and runnning. Search for: ecology, sculpture, furniture,
landscape, wood and Tasmania. You should get me. In August, Doug Webster
came out to Australia for a month long visit. My first visitor from the
Patton Pool years!!! I am completeing a project that Doug Webster and I
started in August: a ring of 300 trees on the outside of a circle 200 feet
in diameter. The job these past few days was to cut out the shrubs and
grass within the circle so that I can extablish a native grass "sanctuary".
If left on its own, the area would eventually revert to bushland and thick
scrub. An area of grass gives the wallabies a place to eat. A good project
but a lot of work. What made yesterday even more tiring was that I took
a little time off to ride a few waves since there was a nice off shore
wind blowing. So far on my property I've planted over 1,500 trees. I purchased
this land in 1991 after my house in Hobart burned down in a forest fire
(here called a bush fire) and every year I try to plant out 200 to 300
trees native to the area. After the house fire I quit the University of
Tasmania where I had been lecturing in design since 1985 and struck out
on my own. It's hard giving up tenured positions at any university, but
it was time to get back into my own art work full time and to get out of
the city to a place that offered an inspiring landscape for such work.
Hence Roaring Beach. Over the past six years I've created a body of work
that I call "Earth Links-seating for dialogue"; a series of indoor and
outdoor benches sculpted out of solid Tasmanian wood. They are meditative
places to sit. I live in a very beautiful part of the world, the work I
create has meaning and beauty, I'm able to help heal this land and I'm
relatively healthy. (12/97)
