My Life After Patton:
After leaving Patton, I went to Ohio University. I was there for one
year and majored in swimming. Studying was not high on my priority list.
The following September I left Detroit for California where I spent two
very special years. While I was there, I developed both as a student and
an athlete; but more importantly as an adult. Foothill college had an exceptional
swimming program. It seemed like everyone that dove into the pool swam
very well: the times were great and of course the competition was the best.
During my stay, I worked out with Santa Clara for two years and believe
me their workouts were not anything like those at Patton. It was a whole
different world at their practices. During this period, I learned to swim
freestyle. Their attitude was that if you swam freestyle correctly, all
your other events would improve. My freestyle did improve and I did get
to swim on a "B" team 400 freestyle relay and finally got to experience
what it was like to break 50 seconds for 100 free (49.8). I left Northern
California and went to Santa Barbara and lifeguarded for three summers.
Now that was a great experience: working on the beach for the summer. We
were paid for 8 hours but we only worked for 4 hours. During that time
we usually surfed or dove for our dinners. Halibut or sea bass was very
tasty but we didn't always get so lucky. My last two years of college were
at Cal State University Long Beach. I recieved my degree in business (marketing).
After graduating, I worked for the marine department in Long Beach for
several years. I operated a rescue boat and our job was to assist swimmers
caught in the surf and also distressed vessels out at sea. Believe me that
was a hard job to leave! We had the perfect office and it was never a bad
day, if you know what I mean. But things change and I had to get a real
job. I got married in 1979 and was married for 9 years. I have a daughter
named Brieanna, 18. She is graduating in June and is not a swimmer. Brieanna
will be attending UCLA in the fall and plans on studying business as a
major. However, her first love is drama. She has interviewed with "90210"
and who knows what might happen. My son Ress is 16 and has played baseball
up to the age of 14 and now "on his own" decided he wanted to swim and
play water polo. He doesn't believe the stories about Patton. It's hard
to believe them myself!! Both my kids have lived with me for the last 8
years. I surely have been blessed with so many beautiful experiences. I
love to attend his practices and watch those kids go back and forth. It's
then that I can really appreciate what we had when we were at Patton. At
the present time, I am working with a technology company from Draper, Utah.
A close friend has deveoped a communications technology that is revolutionizing
the way we communicate with each other. You will hear about it very soon.

stay in touch! (5/99)
Reflections:
The swimmers at Santa Clara and at Foothill would always ask me over
and over again about what it was like to swim in the Detroit River. They
would also ask me to ask George Haines if we could try doing a "rat race,"
but it never happened, too bad. I know those guys would have just ate it
up!!! Yes, it was a totally different world there but my fondest years
were at Patton. It was by far a great big family that did everythig together
and it brings tears to my eyes when I think of all great times we had.
